Strymon

The Strymon is a river running through Makedonia, Greece, which flows into the Strymonian Gulf in the Aegean Sea.
History[edit | edit source]
During the second Persian invasion of Greece, the Emperor of the Achaemenid Empire, Xerxes I, had white horses sacrificed and nine young women and men buried alive before crossing the river to confront the forces of Leonidas I of Sparta at the Hot Gates of Thermopylai in Malis.[1]
The place near the river where this sacrifice took place subsequently became known as Xerxes' Sacrifice of the Nine. By the time of the Peloponnesian War, the Followers of Ares had established a camp there, which was later cleared by the Spartan misthios Kassandra.[1]
