Rauf (Arabic: رؤوف) was a member of the Syrian sect of the Assassin Order during the 12th century.[1]

Biography

Rauf served the Assassin Order as a combat instructor, training new Assassin recruits in the Order's fighting techniques.[1]

In 1191, he greeted the Master Assassin Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad upon his safe return to Masyaf after the failed mission at Solomon's Temple.[1]
Almost immediatly after, Masyaf was attacked by the Templar Order, who were rampaging through Masyaf's village. He met with Altaïr again at the gates of the fortress and explained that there were civilians still trapped in the village and that he should go distract the Templars while Rauf and some others brought the villagers safely inside the fortress.[1]

After all the villagers had been brought to safety, Rauf met with Altaïr again, saying that Al Mualim had devised a plan to route the Templars. Rauf, Altaïr and another Assassin simultanously performed a Leap of Faith, showing that they do not fear death, but embrace it. Whereas Altaïr and Rauf safely landed in bales of hay, the other Assassin broke his leg and Rauf tended to his wound while Altaïr went on to execute the final step of the plan.[1]

Rauf would sometimes ask Altaïr if he would want to show his students some of his skills when their paths crossed again.[1]

Trivia

  • The name "Ra'uf" (رؤوف in Arabic) means "compassionate," which fitted him perfectly, as he showed a warm relationship with Altaïr.[1]
