During the course of Assassin's Creed, the player will control Altaïr as he rises through the ranks of the Assassin's Order after being demoted from the highest rank (Master Assassin) to the lowest. When he is demoted, he loses many pieces of equipment, abilities, 70% of his base Synchronization levels, and all weapons; slowly earning them back as he is promoted. In Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, ranks are reintroduced; as Ezio is now a Master Assassin, he can recruit and train young Assassins.
