The Carnevale is an annual event held in Venice, Italy known for the extravagant costumes and decorated masks. Believed to have started in 1162, it became an official tradition in Renaissance.

Associated with the pre-Lenten festivals celebrated on and around Martedì Grasso, the Carnevale lasted well over a month. People, civilians and noblemen alike, celebrated the festival playing games and competitions in the fair and involving in various activities such as gambling, brothels, and watching entertainers and performers in the streets and city squares. In 1486, after failing to save the Doge of Venice from a plot of the Templars led by Rodrigo Borgia, Assassin Ezio Auditore returned to the workshop of Leonardo da Vinci in order to seek his assistance after being falsely accused of murder of the Doge instead of the actual murdurer Carlo Grimaldi, whom Ezio had dispatched only moments later after the incident.
