Vilified is a memory in Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood.

Ezio defends Monteriggioni with cannons long enough for the townspeople to escape. The Fall of Monteriggioni begins, the city is breached and Mario is killed by Cesare Borgia.

Dialogue

Ezio and Caterina Sforza are in bed in the Villa Auditore.

  • Caterina: Ready to go again?
  • Ezio: You don’t need to ask.
  • Caterina: One should always have the freedom to choose. (They kiss) Shhh. What’s that?
  • Ezio: Probably just training exercises.

A cannonball smashes through a wall on one side of Ezio’s bedroom and then through the other side. Ezio jumps out of bed and gets dressed in some light clothing. He only has time to grab and equip his Hidden Blade.

  • Ezio: Merda (Shit)! I have to find Mario and rally the troops.
  • Caterina: My men are in the courtyard. I aim to lead them around back and flank our attackers.
  • Ezio: Stay out of sight.

Ezio jumps out of the gaping hole in his room and climbs to the roof to assess the situation. Ezio falls off the roof just as another cannonball narrowly misses him and smashes into the place where he was standing. Mario picks him up where he lands.

Ezio's last talk with Mario.
  • Mario: It’s the Borgia.
  • Ezio: How did we not see this?
  • Mario: They must have massed to the East during the night. We need to hold them off until the townspeople have escaped.
  • Ezio: I will take care of it.
  • Mario: Use the cannons above the ramparts. I intend to lead a frontal assault.
  • Ezio: Do you have it?
  • Mario: I am keeping it safe. The Borgia must not be allowed to breach the walls until everyone is safely away. Insieme per la vittoria (We stand together)!
  • Ezio: Insieme (Together). Uncle... be careful.
  • Mario: I will.

Ezio jumps from the training yard of the Villa, onto a horse at the foot of the stairway. He rides for cannons through the city as it gets bombarded by cannons. The townspeople are running around in panic.

Ezio leaps onto a horse.
  • Woman 1: My Children. Where are my children?!
  • Man 1: Where are we going?
  • Child: My mother. I can't find my mother.
  • Woman 2: Aiuto! Aiuto! (Help me! Help me!)
  • Man 2: Oh God. Where are you, Marcello?!
  • Woman 3: Run! Run!

A wall falls across Ezio's path as he approaches the front gate. It kills his horse but he manages to jump off in time. He begins using a ladder which is then destroyed along with a large section of the city wall, he then climbs up the remains and runs towards the cannons.

  • Man: Signor Auditore, thank God! We must hold them back until the villagers escape!
  • Ezio: Load the cannon.
  • Man: Destroy their cannons Signore (Sir). We have lost everything. Aim carefully, we can't withstand this attack much longer! Nearly half the townspeople have made it out! Reload. Reload. Aahhh! They're destroying us! Pater Noster, qui es coelies, sanctificeteur nomen tourn (Our Father, who are in heaven, blessed be your name).

The cannon operator next to Ezio is killed, and Ezio's own cannon is destroyed. He switches places.

  • Man: He's dead Signore (Sir)! Keep loading the cannon. Some townspeople still haven't escaped! Keep going! Almost all the townspeople are outside the walls! You saved them! ... Wait. Soldiers are climbing the walls. Signore (Sir), forget the cannons. You must stop them! Go! I will carry on here!

Ezio runs along the battlements towards the attackers that have breached the walls.

  • Man: Show no mercy!
  • Attacker: No one shall be spared! Take this town for the Borgia!

Ezio kills the attackers on the city walls and looks toward the city gate.

  • Man: They're breaching the gate!

Mario staggers through the gate and collapses. Behind him are Cesare Borgia, Lucrezia Borgia, Juan Borgia the Elder, Octavian de Valois, Micheletto Corella and a group of soldiers. They take Caterina and Mario captive. Ezio runs for the gate along the roof tops. Arquebusiers take aim at him.

    Mario collapses at Cesare's feet.
Cesare: I know you’re there, Ezio. The Pope told me about you and your little group of Assassins... and this. (He holds up the Apple) Give me the gun his friend fashioned for us. We’ve had too much bloodshed. I think a cleansing is in order. So, consider this an invitation, from my family... to yours.

Ezio is shot at the same time as he witnesses Cesare shoot Mario. He falls into the street.

Outcome

Mario is executed. Ezio is shot and badly wounded. Cesare reclaims the apple for himself and Caterina is taken captive.

Trivia

  • The friend Cesare speaks of, that fashioned the gun for the Borgia, was Leonardo Da Vinci under duress.
  • This memory was featured in the E3 2010 demo of the game.
