A group of Vigilantes, the variety often seen in Acre.

Vigilantes are groups of men that will aid you if you find yourself being chased through a city. If you are being pursued, and you enter into an area with vigilantes in it, they will step in and impede the way of the guards who are trying to chase you. You can unlock vigilantes throughout cities in the game by saving female citizens who are in trouble with the guards.

Vigilantes will grab guards, knock them over, rough them up a bit and do whatever it takes to get them off your back, while you run and make a clean getaway. Alternatively, you can use them to stop the guards from defending themselves, granting you a quick and easy kill. If a large number of guards are chasing you, you can use them to block a few of the men whilst you deal with the rest.

If you walk into a group of them, they will let you in and watch you for a couple seconds, saying things like "Thank you for saving my daughter" or "I am forever in your debt for saving her."

Vigilantes return in Assassin's Creed Brotherhood having the same functions and the same abilities however guards will attack the Vigilantes even if they're pursuing you, and the Vigilantes will continue just grabbing and pulling at them. They will often be seen near guard groups who are standing around, they will be taunting them and yelling at them, however they will not get any attention from the guards who will just stand there and talk. And if all the guards are killed (such as by an arrow storm) they will disassemble and walk off. They likely appear due to the removal of a Borgia Tower.
