The Tiber (Italian: Tevere) is a river that runs through the Italian city of Rome. During the Renaissance, it separated the Vaticano District from the other three city districts.
The Castel Sant'Angelo rests on the river bank, while Tiber Island, the only island upon the river, can be found further south.[1]
Bridges
By the time of the Renaissance, six bridges had been built over the Tiber which allowed civilians to cross the river from various points within the city. Among these bridges were the Ponte Sant'Angelo and the Ponte Sisto.[1]
However, only two of these bridges crossed onto Tiber Island, both of which were marked with the Templar cross. No other bridge in Rome had these symbols, despite Tiber Island housing an Assassin headquarters.[1]
History
In 47 BCE, the Roman legate Agrippa wrote a note to Flavius Metellus, proconsul of Cyrenaica and a member of the Egyptian Order of the Ancients, in which he wildly claimed Cleopatra sought to make herself Queen of Rome and that he felt it would certainly be in her character to sail down the Tiber in a solid gold barge.[2]
Centuries later in 1499, the Italian Assassin Ezio Auditore da Firenze considered dropping the Apple of Eden into the Tiber after a confrontation with Pope Rodrigo Borgia in the Vatican.[3] The following year, he re-established the Assassins' headquarters in a store room on Tiber Island, which had several tunnel entrances underneath the city of Rome. It was also possible for Ezio to enter the headquarters by diving into sewage tunnels that fed from the island into the river.[1]
Whenever Ezio and Niccolò Machiavelli inducted their apprentices into the Order, the ceremony concluded with the new Assassin performing a Leap of Faith into the Tiber.[1][4]
It was the habit of Cesare Borgia to have the bodies of his enemies discarded into the Tiber, including that of his brother Juan Borgia the Younger[5] and Francesco Troche.[6] In 2012, the Templars continued this practice by dumping Clay Kaczmarek's body in the Tiber after his death.[7]
Trivia
- In Assassin's Creed: Identity, because the gameplay did not support swimming, the player could only traverse the river by freerunning over gondolas connected between the Vaticano District and Centro District.
