Themiskyra was a city along the coast of the Black Sea.
History
According to the Greek mythology, the city was inhabited by the Amazons. In order to complete the ninth task set by King Eurystheas of Mycenae, Herakles journeyed to Themiskyra.[1]
At the time, the queen of the Amazons, Hippolyta, lived in Themiskyra, and Herakles sought her out, convincing her to give up her girdle, as asked by Eurystheas. However, the Amazons attacked him due to malicious rumors spread by the goddess Hera amongst them. In the scuffle, Herakles slew Hippolyta, claiming her girdle and leaving Themiskyra.[1]
