When engaged in close combat, they would move backwards to keep their distances and shoot since the snipers aren't more skilled in close combat than normal guards, and could be easily dispatched with a counter-attack. They could also be used to shoot enemy soldiers, by using the latter as human shields, or through the use of berserk darts.
