Description
Design
Upon detonation, a smoke screen bomb produces a cloud of smoke dense enough to obscure all vision such that absent special gadgets or Eagle Vision, it would be impossible for the human eye to penetrate the fog.[1] Typically, the smoke is so debilitating that it affects more than just sight, disorienting unprepared individuals by suffocating them. Because the smoke is not commonly designed to last for more than several seconds before dissipating, no permanent ill effects are dealt to those breathing the gas.[2][3][1]
Functions and techniques
As a result, the smoke bomb is a fairly simple yet enormously versatile explosive device ideal for stealth operations. Its foremost function is to facilitate disengagement from conflict through concealment, permitting quick escapes or tactical retreats.[1][2][3][4] However, it may also be used offensively to incapacitate groups of enemies, creating an opening for unimpeded engagement. In an age of fully automatic, high-calibre firearms, this may be necessary for outnumbered, under-equipped Assassins to close the gap against special forces.[5]
Aside from combat or escapes, smoke bombs are potent tools for assassination or counter-assassination. Similar to the aforementioned techniques, Assassins have relied on smoke bombs to stun powerful enemies for added insurance before approaching with their Hidden Blade.[4][6][7] Owing to their history as casualties of such assassinations, Templar recruits who participated in the 2011–2014 Animi Training Program learned to deploy last-second smoke bombs at the approach of enemy assassins, providing them the needed opportunity to counter-attack or escape.[8][9][10][11]
The non-lethal nature of smoke bombs ensures that operatives deploying it have greater control over the injury they inflict on enemies in hostile environments, providing the opportunity for them to avoid killing altogether.[6][7]In crowded, public areas, this is especially vital as it permits Assassins to engage or disengage without harming innocent civilians in accordance with their strict Creed.[1]
Variations
The smoke bomb crafted and employed by the Assassins has historically utilized white phosphorus as its main component.[1] Under the Ottoman Brotherhood, smoke bombs were created, like other bombs in their arsenal, with either impact shells or fuse shells. These alter the design of the bomb such that it either detonates upon impact or after a short delay upon ignition, where the former emits a near-instantaneous burst of smoke and the latter a slower stream. Alternatively, the explosive components were encased in a sticky pouch or modified into a trip mine instead, creating smoke bombs which stuck to a target for greater precision before engulfing it or which could only be set off by an unwitting trespasser.[1]
An Ottoman-era Assassin smoke bomb had a blast radius of 2.0, 3.0, or 4.0 metres depending on whether Indian gunpowder, Arabic gunpowder, or British gunpowder were used respectively.[1] Similarly, the normal smoke bomb used in the first stage of the Animi Training Program had a blast radius of 3.2 or 4 metres.[8]
History
During the formative years of the Hidden Ones, Bayek of Siwa made use of smoke bombs as a distractive tool. Centuries later, in 1478, Ezio Auditore da Firenze traveled to San Gimignano to assassinate the remaining Pazzi conspirators, and in particular, Stefano da Bagnone. Upon reaching the abbey where he was located, one of Mario Auditore's mercenaries provided Ezio with a smoke bomb to use upon escape. From there on, smoke bombs were able to be purchased from blacksmiths.[12]
In Rome, during the 16th century, smoke bombs were also able to be purchased from blacksmiths for 350ƒ each, however, only after the smoke bomb pouch was purchased from a tailor for 9500ƒ. This allowed Ezio to carry a total of three smoke bombs at a time.[3]
Despite their paramilitary use, smoke bombs have been sold by blacksmiths
In Italy, they were purchasable from blacksmiths, whereas in Constantinople, smoke screen bombs were required to be crafted using any shell or gunpowder type combined with the phosphorus effect. Additionally, they could also be obtained by looting the corpses of Varangian guards.
- Main article: Piri Reis: Smoke Screen
In Constantinople, smoke screen bombs were crafted instead, using an ingredient called phosphorus. Upon speaking to Piri Reis about the bomb, he explained to Ezio on how to use the new explosive. To allow him to try the bomb for himself, Piri sent Ezio on a mission in which the Assassin used the smoke screen bomb to infiltrate a church courtyard and steal the bomb ingredients stored there.[1]
Trivia
- The achievement "I can see you" was achieved by killing 5 guards, while they were caught in the effects of the smoke screen bomb.
- During Abstergo Industries' Animi Training Program – and by extension, the Animus games console by Abstergo Entertainment – smoke screen bombs were used by Abstergo's recruits and the game's audience to stun enemies and prevent attacks.
