SAVAK (Persian: سازمان اطلاعات و امنیت کشور), known also as the National Intelligence and Security Organization, was the secret police and intelligence service founded in 1957 by Iran's king, Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, along with the help of the United States' CIA and Israel's Mossad.
At its peak period, SAVAK had nearly 60,000 agents, although more conservative estimates placed the figures at around 4,000-6,000 members. The organization has been described as Iran's "most hated and feared institution", due to its practice of torturing and executing opponents of the Pahlavi regime. After the Iranian Revolution of 1979, the group was disbanded and all its directors were executed.
In one of the rifts he programmed into the Animus, Clay Kaczmarek revealed to Desmond Miles and the other Assassins that the group's foundation was puppeteered by Abstergo Industries and the Templar Order, in order to terrorize citizens and protect capitalist oil interests in Iran.
