Romulus (771 BCE – 717 BCE) was the legendary founder and first king of Rome. According to Roman mythology, Romulus and his twin brother, Remus, were raised by a she-wolf in a cave known as Lupercal located at the Palatine Hill.[1][2][3]

By the early 16th century, Romulus was worshipped by a cult known as the Followers of Romulus, who believed that Romulus was part wolf and part man.[4][5] The central shrine of the Followers contained what they believed to be the unbreakable armor and dagger of Romulus. However, in truth, the equipment had belonged to Marcus Junius Brutus, and had only been entrusted to the Followers as an icon to worship.[6]
