Rome is the final location in Sequence 14 of Assassin's Creed II. The player will have to traverse Castel Sant Angelo's walls to reach the Templar leader Rodrigo Borgia, who has become Pope Alexander VI. However, unlike the other locations, you may not revisit Rome after the final mission, and nor does it have shops or any areas available for free-roaming. Rome is also the main location of Lineages last part.

It could be that the level was designed to be like Arsuf in the first game (a location you will be able to visit only once with no remarkable locations).

Unlike Assassin's Creed II, the player is able to freely walk around in the city of Rome and it is revealed that the Templars' headquarters are based here. Together with the other Assassins, Ezio Auditore da Firenze traveled to the city to take down the remnants of the Templar order.

Rome (Roma in Italian) was a major city in Renaissance Italy, capital of the Papal State, and headquarters to the Italian sect of the Templar Order.

Renaissance era

The defacto capital of the Italian peninsular, as well as its largest city, Rome had been the headquarters of the Knights Templar for an unknown amount of time by the late 15th Century. In 1476, Rodrigo Borgia, Grand Master of the Knights Templar and a powerful figure in Rome politics briefly left the city to discuss his Order's plans before returning to get Papal approval[3].

In 1492, Rodrigo Borgia became Pope Alexander VI, and head of the Papal State and Catholic Church. Ruling from Rome, he was left alone by the Assassins for the most part until 1499, when Ezio Auditore da Firenze learnt the location of The Vault was in Rome, beneath the Sistine Chapel[1]. During his journey through Rome, Ezio did not visit any of Rome's shops, landmarks of notable locations, heading directly for his confrontation with Borgia, and then leaving.

Following the assault of Cesare Borgia on the Assassin headquarters of Monteriggioni, Ezio Auditore returned to Rome to exact his revenge, assuming control of Tiber Island. The Rome of this time had fallen behind its fellow cities of Florence and Venice, and had stagnated in terms of development under the thumb of the Borgia[2].

Landmarks

Landmarks in Rome included the Pantheon[4], the Colosseum[5], the Passetto di Borgo and Sistine Chapel[1].
