Rauf (Arabic: رؤوف) is the first assassin to greet Altaïr upon his return to Masyaf after the failed mission at Solomon's Temple. Unlike that of Abbas, who stops Altaïr at the fortress gate and taunts him, Rauf has a friendly relationship with Altaïr.

Role in storyline

After first greeting Altaïr, Rauf and Altaïr go their separate ways. They will again meet when the Templars attack Masyaf. As Altaïr leaves the fortress, Rauf explains the plan. There are some villagers still trapped in the village overrun by Templars. Altaïr must "distract" the Templars, while Rauf will bring the villagers into the fortress, to safety.

Rauf makes a third appearance in the first memory segment, in which he instructs Altaïr of the plan to defeat the Templars, who are already at the fortress gates. Altaïr, Rauf, and another, unnamed assassin unnamed simultaneously perform a Leap of Faith to demonstrate to the Templars that they "do not fear death, they embrace it". Altaïr and Rauf land safely in the hay- however, the unnamed assassin breaks his leg badly. Rauf stays back to quiet and comfort the man, and instructs Altaïr to continue on and activate the trap.

Name

The name "Rauf" (رؤوف in Arabic) means "compassionate". This fits him perfectly- he shows a warm relationship with Altaïr.
