Pingyuan (平原) was a city and commandery of China during the Tang dynasty which corresponds to present-day Dezhou, Shandong.[1]
History
Prior to the outbreak of the An Lushan Rebellion in late 755,[2] the official Yan Zhenqing ran afoul of Chancellor Yang Guozhong and was reassigned to the post of Pingyuan's grand protector as a form of exile from the capital of Chang'an.[3] He was still serving in this capacity[4] in 756 shortly before Chang'an fell to An Lushan's forces.[5] Unlike the commandery of Changshan in Hebei that his brother, Yan Gaoqing, governed,[6] it had been situated away from Lushan's path from Fanyang to Luoyang and thence to Chang'an.[7] It had therefore escaped his attention until after Gaoqing's loyalist rebellion had been crushed.[4]
Yan Gaoqing and his son Yan Jiming were executed in Luoyang, and Lushan sent a Yeluohe envoy, Duan Ziguang, to Gaoqing with this news and the heads of the three top officials of Luoyang to attempt to intimidate Zhenqing into submitting Pingyuan. However, survivors from the Battle of Changshan, alongside the Hidden One Li E, had arrived before him with an alliance proposal to Zhenqing. They ambushed and slaughtered the Yeluohe delegation, upon which Zhenqing formally approved their request for him to take command of the Hebei Loyalist Army, drawing on the Assassins' Northern Treasury Under Heaven to fund and equip new recruits.[4]
