Paul (died 874) was a former priest of Oxeneforda, England, and later an acolyte under Fulke, the Maegester of the Wardens of Relics branch of the Order of the Ancients.
Biography
Paul joined the priesthood in Oxeneforda but soon grew disillusioned with the Church's practices. This belief became engulfed once he came into contact with Fulke. When he became too vocal about his new beliefs, the bishop expelled him. However, he found new tutelage under Fulke as they worked together for the "true gods".[1]
In 874, Paul and Fulke came into possession of the Saga Stone, which they saw as proof of their beliefs. However, they attracted the attention of Lady Eadwyn, who sought to imprison them for their heresy. While Fulke was captured, Paul made his way to the abandoned Evinghou Tower and hid with the Stone.[1]
Paul remained in hiding, waiting for Fulke, but was soon found by Eadwyn's forces. Unable to decipher the Stone's message, he died protecting it as Eadwyn took the stone from his possession. Later, Fulke and her newfound allies, the Vikings Eivor Varinsdottir and Sigurd Styrbjornsson and the Hidden One Basim Ibn Ishaq, came to the tower, only to discover Paul's corpse and the Stone missing. Fulke mourned the death of her friend and gave him his last rites before surmising Eadwyn had killed Paul and taken the Stone.[1]
