A Nereid is a female nymph of the sea in the Greek mythology, specifically associated with the Aegean Sea.

The most notable member of the Nereids is Thetis, the mother of the legendary hero Achilles.[1]

In the 5th century BCE, a monument which had sunk off the shore of Mount Koryphum in Argolis was dedicated to the nereids.[1]
