Michihito (方仁; 1517 – 1593), also known as Emperor Ōgimachi (正親町天皇), was the 106th Emperor of Japan, reigning from 1557 until his abdication in 1586.[1] In 1580,[2] Emperor Ōgimachi sent a court official to broker terms of surrender and a peace settlement from the Ikkō-ikki, a collective of Jōdo Shinshū Buddhists who had rebelled against Oda Nobunaga in the Ishiyama Hongan-ji War.[3] Like all past emperors, Ōgimachi lived in Kyoto's Imperial Palace and was widely respected as a claimed descendant of the sun goddess Amaterasu but had little money of his own to spend on. This changed when Nobunaga helped furnish the palace and personally paid him a stipend, acts which increased his own legitimacy as ruler.[4]
