Following the Great Fire of London in 1666, the idea to build a residence for all Lord Mayors, who used to conduct municipal business out of their home or guild hall, came about. Architect George Dance the Elder was hired to design and build the Mansion House, with construction starting in 1739 and completed in 1758. Sir Crisp Gascoyne moved into the House in 1752 while it was still under construction.[1]
