The Lykaon Wolf was a legendary large wolf which inhabited the Dioskouroi Peninsula in Lakonia, Greece during the 5th century BCE.
During the Peloponnesian War the wolf was hunted down by the Spartan misthios Kassandra at the request of Daphnae, the leader of the Daughters of Artemis. Kassandra subsequently looted its pelt and gave it to Daphnae in Phokis.[1]
Trivia
- In Greek mythology, Lykaon was a king of Arkadia who offered the flesh of his own son to Zeus to see whether Zeus was truly all-knowing. As punishment for this gruesome deed, Zeus transformed Lykaon into a wolf.
