Leonardo da Vinci is the best friend of Ezio. He will be his personal engineer like Q in James Bond, making him various inventions (gadgets, items and weapons). He's the creator of the Hidden Gun, the Smoke Bomb, the Flying Machine, the dual Hidden Blades...etc. According to Patrice Desilets (creative director of the game), Leonardo has also manufactured the hidden blade so it isn't required of Ezio to amputate his ring fingers.
Leonardo was a student in Verrocchio’s workshop until 1476 in Florence. In reality, there is little historical information on the real Leonardo's life between 1476 and 1481, giving the game developers the chance to supplement it as follows: the Auditore family patronized Leonardo to open his own workshop. Ezio met him in his workshop and became very close.
