Kurama-dera (鞍馬寺) is a Buddhist temple located in the far north of Kyoto, Japan.[1] During the Sengoku period, it was situated on the outskirts of the city, within the Genbu Highlands region of Yamashiro Province.

In July 1582, the Kakushiba ikki members Fujibayashi Naoe and Yasuke traveled to the temple to confront the leader of the Shinbakufu and former shōgun, Ashikaga Yoshiaki. When they arrived, they found Yoshiaki humbly sitting on the ground with the box holding the Jewel of the Imperial Regalia in front of him.[2]
Although Naoe and Yasuke were ready to eliminate him, Yoshiaki bargained for his life, offering the pair the box and any information he possessed about Naoe's mother Tsuyu and the Templars. He told Naoe that his spies had last seen someone matching Tsuyu's description at Sakafuneishi in Yamato, and Yasuke that Kimura Kei could be found recruiting people to the Templar cause in Takahara Village. With these new leads, Naoe and Yasuke spared Yoshiaki, convinced that the former shōgun no longer posed a threat without the Shinbakufu, and left him alone at the temple.[2]
Before departing, Naoe and Yasuke recovered two lost pages scattered across the temple's grounds. Naoe also climbed its tallest pagoda and surveyed the region.[3]
