Kemal Reis (c. 1451 – 1511) was an Ottoman privateer and admiral, as well as the the paternal uncle of the famous cartographer Piri Reis.
Biography[edit | edit source]
When Piri Reis was in his early teens, he accompanied Kemal on privateering expeditions in and around the Mediterranean.[1] On one of the expeditions to Rhodes, the pair lured many Hospitaliers from their palace posts and into the paths of caltrops only to see "them dancing in the street in a full suit of armor".[2]
By the time Piri Reis was in his twenties, both men had joined the Ottoman Navy.[1] During the Ottoman–Venetian War, Kemal was already a captain and favored the use of sticky resin bombs because they would stick to the hulls of large ships.[3]
After the war, Kemal continued to operate in the West Mediterranean. In September 1510, he sailed out from Gallipoli with cargo ships bound for Alexandria, Egypt to join an Ottoman supply fleet delivering wood and cannons to aid the Mamluks in their fight against the Portuguese Empire in the Indian Ocean. Although his ships passed the Duchy of Naxos and were spotted in December 1510,[4] Kemal suddenly died in early 1511[1] when his ship and just over half the fleet were wrecked in a storm; news of his death did not reach Turkey until November 1511.[4]
