The Karluks were a Turkic nomadic tribal confederation that resided along the Black Irtysh and near the Altai Mountains.[1] In the mid-8th century, they were allies of the Tang for a time until the Battle of Talas. In that confrontation between the Tang and the Abbasid Caliphate, the Karluks suddenly betrayed the Tang on the fifth day, handing the victory decisively over to the Abbasids.[2]
