Pope John XXII (Latin: Ioannes XXII; 1249 – 4 December 1334), born Jacques Duèze was Pope from 1316 to his death, succeeding Clement V.

In 1322, John declared the Franciscans' vow of poverty to be illegal, claiming that Jesus Christ had owned property and encouraged his followers to do the same. This meant that the Franciscans were forced to collect money and land which would go to the Pope.[1][2]
