A jiedushi (Chinese: 節度使) was a regional military governor of China. The position was established in the Tang dynasty, where they corresponded to military commands in the frontier to hold foreign enemies at bay. These military governors over time became de facto warlords with enough autonomy to challenge imperial rule. In 754, the jiedushi An Lushan did precisely this when he rose in rebellion against the court.[1]
