"Jack the Ripper" (Unknown – 1888), known as Jack the Lad during his youth, was a member of the British Brotherhood of Assassins, active in the Whitechapel district of London up until 1888.
Jack became infamous in 1888 following a series of gruesome murders of young women, in fact fellow Assassins trying to stop his madness; his actions threatened the very existence of the Assassins in London.
Biography
During his youth Jack's mother was butchered by the Templars of Crawford Starrick, and a traumatized Jack was placed into the Lambeth Asylum, where the ill-treatment aggravated his mental instability. After the death of Starrick in 1868, Jack was freed of the Asylum by Jacob Frye, and became one of his new initiates.
In 1870, he traveled with Jacob and the other initiates to India, in order to learn the Fear skills of the Indian Brotherhood, a group who Jacob's sister, Evie Frye, had joined.
Upon returning to London, Jack begun to develop an extremist view of the Assassins' mission, and his sanity rapidly slipped away. Eventually, Jack usurped control control of the Rooks from Jacob, and begun killing all those sent against him. Radicalising his followers, Whitechapel - the centre of Jack's operations, descended into an area of crime and villainy.
During the Autumn of Terror, Jack murdered a number of Assassins sent after him by Jacob Frye, including Mary Ann Nichols, Annie Chapman, Elizabeth Stride, Catherine Eddowes, and Mary Jane Kelly, as well as a number of others who got in his way.
Legacy
Following his defeat in late 1888, Jack's true identity, or even the fact that he had been killed, was never revealed by Frederick Abberline of the Metropolitan Police Service. This was, in part, to protect the Assassins from discovery, and a public backlash.
Personality and characteristics
The trauma of losing his mother, and his subsequent incarceration at Lambeth Asylum, had a lasting affect on young Jack's mental stability. Following his liberation from the Asylum in 1868, Jack was brought into the Assassin fold by Jacob Frye, and trained among a selection of new recruits.
Jack views on the Assassin Order quickly developed, and he came to the conclusion that Jacob was responsible, however indirectly, for the death of his mother. Looking to gain revenge on his mentor, Jack gradually brought the Rooks under his control, before turning them against the Fryes' and their Assassins completely.
Jack brutally murdered all those sent against him - Assassins commonly in the guise of local prostitutes - in order to send a message to Jacob, and later Evie. He was also meticulous in his plans to remove any evidence of his existence and prior life, going so far as to kill a number medical staff at Lambeth Asylum who might have any living memory of him.
Despite his actions against the London Assassins, Jack was careful not to reveal the Order's existence. Whilst most of his "victims", Assassins sent to stop him, managed to hide their Assassin rings before death, at least one had their finger forcibly removed post-mortem in order to hide their connection.
Equipment and skills
Jack was well trained by his mentor, Jacob Frye, and was an experienced brawler and Assassin; by the time of the Ripper murders, Jack was more than capable of holding his own against Jacob Frye in hand-to-hand combat, and was almost impervious to frontal attack when engaging Jacob's twin sister Evie. He was also possessed of an indomitable will, never giving up on the task at hand.
Due to his connection with Lady Owers, Jack's eyes-and-ears within the city, Jack's manipulations and influence spread across the City of London and Whitechapel.
Trivia
- As displayed in promotional images, Jack the Ripper's face is hidden behind a mask crafted from what resembles a burlap sack. This is presumably due to his current-day anonymity, with extensive research into his identity still proving inconclusive.
- When playing as him Jack is able to kill random civilians, however doing so too much will still cause desynchronization, with the animus stating "Jack did not compromise his plans by killing random civilians".
- When playing as Jack, you will receive messages in a readable but scruffy form of handwriting on your screen around Jack's body, highlighting Jack's thoughts; this emphasises his loss of sanity.
- Jack the Ripper is the first historical figure in the whole of the Assassin's Creed series to be a playable character in one of the main titles.
