The Huaqing Palace (華清宮) was a palace located near Chang'an, China during the Tang dynasty.
In 754, after the Flower Banquet, General An Lushan visited Emperor Xuanzong at the palace, crying and pleading, claiming to fear for his life for having caused Right Chancellor Yang Guozhong to hate him. The Emperor pitied the general and piled heaps of rewards onto him afterwards.[1]
The following year, Yang Guozhong and Gao Lishi also paid a visit to the Emperor at Huaqing, surprising him and his concubines at the hot springs adjacent the palace. Yang claimed to have uncovered strong evidences that An Lushan had been plotting a rebellion, having invaded the general's house and tortured his subordinates for confessions. The Emperor admonished the chancellor, but showed mercy due to the presence of his beloved concubine and Guozhong's cousin, Yang Yuhuan. After Guozhong left, Gao Lishi took the Emperor aside to inform him of reports of troops converging in Fanyang.[2]
