The Grand Bazaar was a large market in Constantinople.

History

The Grand Bazaar opened to the public in 1461 and was a popular market which offerings included food, spices, pottery, and fabric. It was a very famous Turkish landmark and shopping location in the Ottoman Empire. It was vastly enlarged during the reign of Suleiman the Magnificent.

Trivia

  • The modern day Grand Bazaar is one of the largest covered markets in the world with between 250,000 and a half million visitors daily.
  • The name means "Covered Bazaar" (Turkish: Kapalıçarşı).
  • An ally of the Assassins owned a shop in the bazaar.
