Albany is the capital of the state of New York, United States. It was also one of the oldest settlements of the British Colonies and one of the largest of the Hudson River Valley during the 18th century.
History
Originally inhabited by the Iroquois and Algonquian tribes such as the Mohicans, the Albany region was claimed by the Dutch explorer Henry Hudson in 1609 and was settled in 1614 as a trading post named Beverwijck. After the British took control of the area in 1664, it was renamed Albany.[1]
During the French and Indian War, Albany became a warring frontier between British troops led by Colonel William Johnson and the French Army.[2] In 1754, representatives from the colonies met at the Albany City Hall[2] to discuss plans for a system of common defense.[1] The conference, known as the Albany Congress, was conducted on the request of the British Lords of Trade,[1] and it was here that the later American Founding Father Benjamin Franklin first introduced the concept of a greater union between the colonies.[1][2]
Later, French and Assassin forces under Kesegowaase attacked Albany in the hopes of retrieving the Voynich manuscript that was being held by the Templar George Monro after the Siege of Fort William Henry. While the British managed to drive back the French forces with the help of the Templar Shay Cormac, Monro was killed by the Assassin Liam O'Brien. Shay later purged the city of the Assassin influence by capturing their bureau.[2]
