Albany is the capital of the state of New York, United States. It was also one of the oldest settlements of the British Colonies, and one of the biggest of the River Valley area.
History
Originally inhabited by the Iroquois and Algonquian tribes, like the Mohicans, the Albany region was claimed by the Dutch explorer Henry Hudson in 1609 and was settled in 1614 as a trading post. The post was named Beverwijck, but was renamed Albany after the British took control of the area in 1664.
Albany became a warring frontier as the British troops lead by Colonel William Johnson with their rallied natives declared war against the French. A meeting was conducted by the British Lords of Trade, wherein Benjamin Franklin discussed the importance of a union between the colonies to defend against the French.
