The Ealdorman's House was the residence of the ealdorman of Essexe, formed from the remains of a former Roman bath complex in Colcestre. During Birstan's tenure as ealdorman, he stayed in this residence along with his wife Estrid and servant Gisele.
Circa 875, the Viking Eivor Varinsdottir visited the house upon receiving a meeting request from Birstan himself. Upon entering, Eivor caught sight and overheard Birstans' thegns complaining about his absence and lack of rule.
