Abu Musa Muhammad ibn Harun al-Rashid (787 – 813), better known by his regnal name Al-Amin, was the sixth caliph of the Abbasid Empire from 809 to 813.
A son of the previous caliph Harun al-Rashid, Al-Amin was born to him and his wife Zubaydah bint Ja'far. Following his death, Al-Amin succeeded him as caliph, which brought him into conflict with his elder half-brother Abdallah. A civil war broke out between both brothers, with Abdallah gaining the upper hand. When Baghdad came under siege by Abdallah's forces between August 812 and September 813, Al-Amin's mother supported him throughout the siege, moving away from her palace to remain with him in the Round City. Eventually, Al-Amin's forces were defeated and he was captured and executed,[1][2] and his head was displayed in the gibbet which hanged on the Iron Gate.[3] Abdallah then succeeded him as caliph under the name Al-Ma'mun.[2]
