David Walston, commonly known as Big Dave, was a blacksmith who resided within the Davenport Homestead during the American Revolution. While there, David assisted with crafting weapons and other objects, which could later be sold to raise income, or to create weapons to fight with.

Biography

Detention by British Troops

During his travels, the Assassin Connor discovered David in the Frontier, where he was being held at gunpoint by British troops, beaten, dragged, and ridiculed. The leader of the group revealed that David had deserted, but had been searched for and discovered by the group, before being pulled through the forest in order to make an example of him and his crime.

Connor approached the group, prompting a Regular to threaten him and request his departure. Deciding to assist the man, Connor took out all but one of the guards. However, David was subdued by the remaining soldier, who pointed a pistol to his head. Despite this, David drove his elbow into the soldier's stomach, forcing him to lessen his hold, and with the distraction, Connor shot the soldier in the head, ultimately freeing David.

Connor then went on to relieve David of his bonds with a knife, before exchanging names and producing some conversation. Connor offered David hospitality at the Homestead where he would be safe, and a job there as their blacksmith, to which David agreed and relocated to the Homestead.

Obtaining New Tools

Soon after, the Homestead's miner, Norris, requested David's assistance in constructing a new hunting knife from the iron he smelted during his endeavors. The knife in particular was to be given as a gift to the Homestead's huntress, Myriam, as Norris was attracted to her, and had been given advice on the perfect present by Connor.

David agreed, but the tools he possessed were too hard to work the metal, so he then requested the assistance of Connor, who agreed to pick up the required parts from a general store in New York. He added that he would have obtained them himself, but refrained from doing so, as the Regulars were still searching for him.

Upon acquiring the items for David, Connor overheard two British soldiers discussing David's upcoming fate. They revealed that David had caused an entire unit to mutiny, deserting their posts and fleeing the British rule, and how he was undoubtedly destined to receive a great punishment for his actions upon his discovery.

Returning the items to David, Connor shared the soldiers' words, but David had already known they had been searching for him, and believed he would have to face them at some point or another. David also mentioned that Norris had been hanging around, pestering him about the knife, and that he was glad to be able to work on it at last.

Resisting Arrest

Sometime later, David discovered that a British scout had been sneaking around the "Mile's End," and subsequently apprehended him, with Oliver's assistance. As Oliver held the scout at gunpoint, the soldier sunk to his knees, terrified, while Big Dave stood guard nearby.

The soldier then claimed to be alone, and in search of a deserter by the name of "Big Dave." Connor, however, spotted the soldier's companion, and killed him after a brief chase. While Connor was absent, however, the first scout had kicked Oliver in the crotch, before throwing sand into David's eyes, escaping with his life. Following this, David stated that with the man's departure, Connor should soon expect to see company, as the British Army had obtained David's location.

As he had surmised, David was located on the Homestead by a group of British soldiers, who intended to have him sentenced, and likely executed, for his desertion. To this end, Connor, David, Godfrey, Terry, and Myriam fought back and took out a few waves of British troops. Once no more men approached, Connor assured David that he was free, as the British would not waste any additional soldiers to recapture one man.

Later Life

Later, David constructed wedding bands for Norris and Myriam's wedding, which ironically was sparked with the gift of a hunting knife, constructed by David. Later, at the reception, David spoke with Ellen, and Connor soon thereafter, where he expressed his pride in Norris, stating that he couldn't have found a better woman and that he was one of his closest friends. He also attended the funeral of Achilles Davenport, laying a rose on his coffin.

Trivia

• David smoked a pipe, as he was seen puffing on one in "The Mile's End" from time to time.
• It could be revealed that while David and Godfrey were arm-wrestling in "The Mile's End", they both evenly matched each other and forfeited, calling it a "gentlemens' draw."
• David was a religious man, as he was seen in Father Timothy's church, praying and conducting the Sign of the Cross.
• David was a heavy alcoholic, as he was seen stumbling back to his home from the "Mile's End" at times, clutching a bottle, or just absentmindedly dropping it and returning home.
