The Council of Troyes was a church council convened in the city of Troyes, France under Pope Honorius II's authority in 1129. It played a key role in recognizing and legitimizing the Knights Templar.[1][2]
History
Despite the Pope's absence, with Honorius having the Benedictine Cardinal Matthew of Albano to be papal legate in his place,[3] the Templars' founder and first Grand Master Hugues de Payens attended the council to seek official recognition for his order. Led by Bernard de Clairvaux, the council officially endorsed the Templar Order, approving its rule and granting it ecclesiastical support. This marked the beginning of the Templars' rise as a powerful military and religious force during the Crusades.[4] The council also standardized the Templars' attire, choosing white tabards to symbolize purity adorned with the insignia of a red cross pattée to symbolize both their own blood and that of Jesus being shed for humanity.[2]
