The Boar's Taverna was a tavern south of Readingum Abbey in Hamtunscire within the Kingdom of Wessex.
In the 870s, the Viking Eivor Varinsdottir camp upon the tavern, where she saw the bard Beoswith playing to a group of Vikings as they indulged in a bucket of beer. While playing a drinking duel against one of the warriors, Eivor and the Vikings began falling sick from the beer and realized it had been poisoned. Although the rest passed out from the effects, Eivor was able to resist enough and fight the bard, who was behind the poisoning and had sought revenge for his deceased beloved. The bard was unable to defeat Eivor and she soon slew him.[1]
