More specifically it's all about the maturity level of people, as well as their sanity (Or lack thereof). I was playing shooters well before I ever became a teenager, and I never once had the idea that it might be "fun" to kill people in real life. So clearly I was quite mature for my age, but then again, I also had/have no mental illness.
