Most major time periods have their conspiracies. It's up to the writers whether or not they choose to integrate those into the story.
I'll even argue that AC3's story would have been much better (and more "AC-like", at least in my opinion) if the writers had integrated some, if not more, of the stories and conspiracies involving the Sons of Liberty, Freemasons, and the mountains of propaganda that helped to define the time period, as major plot points.
