Hoplites were citizen-soldiers of the Greek city-states across the Hellenic world.
Usually armed with a spear and a shield, hoplites were not professional soldiers but free citizens of the poleis. They were considered the backbone of armies like the Athenian military. Unlike in Athens, in Sparta, non-citizens like the perioikoi and helots could gain the rank of hoplite.[1]
