The Southern Army[1] was an army formed and led by the High King Flann Sinna during the late 9th century. It consisted of mainly members of Southern Uí Néill who supported his reign over Ireland, with additional aided provided by Viking mercenaries[2] and the King of Dublin Bárid mac Ímair.
Following his coronation in 879, King Flann mobilized the army for his campaigns to subjugate the kingdoms in the north of Ireland under his single rule.
