Coral, or precious coral, is the common name given to a genus of marine corals, Corallium. Due to their durable skeleton, colored red or pink-orange, they are used in crafting many items, such as jewelry.
History
In the 9th century, Norse mythology held that the sea-goddess Rán had an underwater realm made of coral.[1]
During the Reconquista, the Spanish Brotherhood of Assassins used coral in order to create various weapons, accessories and pieces of armor.[2]
In the 18th century, the pirate Alonzo Batilla the collected many treasures throughout his life, among were a pair of snuff bottles with coral beadings.[3]
