Kadlin was an Anglo-Saxon handmaiden to Queen Æthelswith of Mercia from Ledecestrescire, England.
History[edit | edit source]
In 873, the handmaiden was tasked by Queen Æthelswith to be her decoy while they were hiding in Templebrough Fort. After some time, they were found by Viking step-siblings Eivor Varinsdottir and Sigurd Styrbjornsson, who were looking to capture the queen. Kadlin pretended to be the queen while Æthelswith made her way out, posing as a handmaiden.[1]
However, Kadlin was soon interrogated by Sigurd about Burgred's whereabouts. Scared, Kadlin spoke honestly of not knowing Burgred's location while Eivor noticed that her hands were those of a servant, not a queen. Realizing the deception, Eivor left to capture the real Æthelswith while Kadlin and the others stayed with Sigurd.[1]
Afterwards, Kadlin found herself captured alongside her fellow handmaidens and Queen Æthelswith by the Great Heathen Army, who took them to Tamworth Fortress. There, she stood beside her queen while Eivor convinced Æthelswith to reveal Burgred's location.[2]
