New Providence is the most populous island of the Bahamas. Nassau, the capital city of the commonwealth, is located on the island.

History[edit | edit source]

The island was first settled by English Puritans who had fled from Bermuda for religious reasons.[1] They founded the city of Charles-Towne, which was later renamed Nassau in 1696 in honor of King William III from the House of Orange-Nassau.[2]

During the War of the Spanish Succession, New Providence was attacked and burnt by French and Spanish troops, leaving it abandoned by the British Empire by 1706.[3] In the aftermath, the island and Nassau became a haven for pirates who had previously served as privateers in the Royal Navy, and was declared a republic. By 1718, with the appointment of Woodes Rogers as Governor of the Bahamas, the British re-annexed New Providence, and the Pirate Republic was dissolved.[4]
