Cougars (Puma concolor) are large predatory cats found in North and South America.
History
During the 9th century, some bandit groups in England kept cougars locked up in cages. The Viking shieldmaiden Eivor Varinsdottir encountered cougars during her travels in Lunden, Tonnastadir, and Vinland.[1]
In the 18th century, when the Kanien'kehá:ka Assassin Ratonhnhaké:ton learned a cougar was attacking children performing rite-of-passage ceremonies in the valley outside his village, he hunted down the animal.[2] In 1773, a white cougar began prowling the Davenport Homestead. Ratonhnhaké:ton and Myriam tracked the animal, causing it to flee into Norris' mine. Ratonhnhaké:ton entered the mine to draw out the animal, and Myriam shot and killed it before it could pounce and harm Norris.[3]
