The sword itself appears to be a Germanic seax sword with a bone hilt. Such weapons were used by Vikings and Saxons during the Dark Ages contradicting the above description since by the time of Sweden these were archaic.
In spite of the above description, the Back Sword is actually based on the Bhutanese {{Wiki|Patag (sword)|Patag}} sword. A Back Sword

The Back Sword was a sword used by Swedish soldiers when they fought against Russia.

A back sword was among the specialty weapons of the police in France at the end of the 18th century. As such, it was not available for regular sale. At some point during Charles Cochon de Lapparent's tenure as Police Minister between April 1796 and July 1797,[1] he gave one to Arno Dorian, a member of the Parisian Brotherhood of Assassins, as a reward for solving the murder of Barto, a comic actor.[2]

An unusual sword used by Swedish soldiers during their war against Russia.

Behind the scenes

The description of the Back Sword, a blade in Assassin's Creed: Unity, makes reference to a war between Sweden and Russia, but it is uncertain which war it refers to.

In spite of the above description, the Back Sword is actually based on the Bhutanese Patag sword. The particular reference most likely being a 19th century example auctioned at Oriental Arms as it matches the exact design of the hilt; furthermore Unity also used another weapon as a reference from that particular source.[3]
