Abd al-Rahman I (731 – 788) was a member of the Umayyad dynasty in Damascus and later the founder and first emir of the Emirate of Córdoba, reigning from 756 until his death in 788.

In 750, the Umayyad Caliphate was overthrown by a rebellion led by the Abbasids. The survivors of the revolution, including Abd al-Rahman I, were driven west and established themselves in Córdoba, founding an emirate.[1][2]
