Once there, he encountered the Templar [[Maria Thorpe]], De Sable's former steward, and also acted as his decoy during Altaïr's past travels. After subduing Maria, Altaïr makes her his prisoner (after refusing to cooperate). As members of the assassin order take her away, Altaïr learned from one of his allies that the Templar's have recently purchased the island of [[Cyprus]] from [[King Richard]], after subduing and imprisoning the island's former emperor, [[Isaac Comnenus]].
