Plot
Resting in Tuscany
In the year 1524, the former Assassin Ezio Auditore had retired to a villa in the countryside of Tuscany, with his wife Sofia and children Marcello and Flavia. While Ezio was writing in his study, Sofia asked him to watch Flavia while she and Marcello visited his sister Claudia. Ezio briefly showed some signs of forgetfulness as he at first mistook their journey for a trip to go and see the play of Machiavelli, a old friend.
Shortly after, he left his study to tend the vines as Flavia played nearby the villa. In the midst of his harvest, he noticed a stranger cloaked in black with a katana strapped to their back, speaking to Flavia and walking away from the fields with her. Fearing the worst, Ezio hurriedly intercepted the stranger and threatened violence if his daughter was not left alone. Flavia intervened by informing him that she was no danger and Ezio recognized the Assassin Insignia on the necklace of the female stranger.
An Untimely Arrival
The Assassin introduced herself as Shao Jun, a Chinese Assassin. She pleaded for Ezio's guidance in saving her country's people and order. Ezio refused, stating that his time with the order was over. He decided that Jun should leave, despite her pleas. Sofia, however, bid that Jun should stay, seeing that she had travelled a long way. Jun kept out of everyone's way while the family prepared to rest for the night.
Ezio stood with his wife at the door of the children's bedroom, pondering the amount of time he had left with his loved ones. Sofia stayed silent, but comforted him with her presence. The two adults went to bed once sure that Flavia and Marcello were asleep.
The next morning, Ezio inspected his villa for the wayward Assassin Shao Jun, and discovered her in his study. Furious, Ezio ordered her to leave his study, and after throwing his notes, journals and inkwell onto the floor, told her firmly to leave Italy entirely. He stated that she had wasted her time looking for him and disrupting his family's peace.
Shao Jun, having memorized a portion of what Ezio wrote in his study, informed him that she simply wanted an understanding of what it would take to restore her order to its former strength. Ezio reluctantly revealed why he was not willing to help, stating that it could compromise his family's safety. He knew that many people still wanted to kill him for his actions over the years and that some of those people could attack his family at any time.

Chinese Assassins
After his family escaped the potentially dangerous area, Ezio and Shao Jun stayed behind to prepare for the eventual siege. Ezio spent some time beside his fire, remembering previous battles he had fought against more troublesome opponents. Shao joined him, and he advised her that the only true way to win back the people of a nation was to fight cruelty and hatred with love. Love was harder to install and didn't always take, but when it was taken up willingly by a city, there was nothing that was impossible for the Assassins to achieve for those people. Shao commented unhappily that the process would take a very long time, but Ezio had performed this actions twice before, both in Rome and Constantinople; he told her kindly that if it took a long time, she was 'doing it right'.

As Ezio waited, the Chinese men arrived with a loud crash as they beat down the door to the Villa. While Shao Jun fought a skilled swordsman on the upper floor, Ezio battled with some others on the lower floor, eventually defeating three of them. Ezio, noticing a cannon-wielding brute readying to fire, hurriedly made his way to the upper floor to intercept the soldiers and save Shao Jun from the cannon's fire. Shao threw three of the needles she kept in place of a Hidden Blade on her wrist, but it was Ezio that stabbed him through the chest as they rammed each other into a tree.
Two Farewells
The morning after the hectic battle, Ezio bid Shao Jun farewell as the Assassin thanked him for his advice and inspirational deeds. Before she could leave, Ezio gave Jun a small chest, mentioning that it could help her some day. When Shao attempted to open it, the old man said that she should open it only if she ever lost direction. As several guards of the Tuscan government arrived at the partially-destroyed Villa, Shao Jun escaped before they see her.

Some time after, Ezio finished what he had been striving to write in his study. Sofia entered the room and informed him that she and Flavia were leaving for the Florentine market. Ezio decided to come with them. There, Ezio sat down at a nearby stone bench while his daughter and wife bought groceries and small trinkets.
As Ezio watched, a young man sat down with him and berated the woman of Florence, declaring that he much preferred the women of Rome. Ezio stated that perhaps it was not the women that were his problem and went into a coughing fit. The two shared a look and Ezio seemed to recognize the boy as he cheekily told the old man that he should probably rest. As the boy left, Ezio looked on his wife and daughter, smiling with contentment. The two glanced back, pleased at first but with expressions that slowly changed to horror.
Ezio Auditore suffered a heart attack and passed away where he sat, his wife and daughter rushing to his side. He died at the age of 65. Left behind by him in his study was a letter addressed to Sofia. Written there:
- "When I was a young man, I had liberty, but I did not see it. I had time, but I did not know it. And I had love, but I did not feel it. Many decades would pass before I understood the meaning of all three. And now, the twilight of my life, misunderstanding has past into contentment.
Love, liberty, and time: once was so disposable, are the fuels that drive me forward. And love, most especially, mio caro. For you, our children, our brothers and sisters. And for the vast and wonderful world that gave us life, and keeps us guessing. Endless affection, mio Sofia.
Forever yours,
Ezio Auditore." - ― [src]

Embers was first revealed in June 6, 2011. The teaser trailer for Embers was released on 21 July 2011, while the full trailer for Embers was revealed on 23 July 2011, during the Comic-Con 2011 Panel. The Comic-Con 2011 Panel recommended watching Embers after completing Revelations, so that the events that unfold are experienced in sequence. The film would run for 21 minutes, offering a unique experience of Ezio's life, and bringing further closure to the Ezio saga.
Embers was subsequently released in DVD format with several special editions of Assassin's Creed: Revelations, which was released on November 15, 2011.
Trivia
- Several movements during the attack on Ezio's villa were taken from animations within the game. For example, when Ezio disarms the soldier, it had the same animation when Ezio would disarm a guard utilizing a short blade.
- A portrait of Emilio Barbarigo, the same portrait found in Ezio's room in Monteriggioni during Assassin's Creed II, can be seen in his study.
- Also, the Portrait of a Young Venetian Woman, the portrait of Sofia painted by Albrecht Dürer, can be seen in the villa's living room.
- Ezio's son, Marcello, was never seen in the movie. Though he can be seen sleeping in his and Flavia's room, Marcello's face was never shown.
- Shao Jun did not wield a hidden blade on her wrist, but on her shoes. Though she kept throwing needles held in bracers in their place.
- The letter left behind by Ezio had a seal with the Assassin insignia on it.
- Both Shao Jun and Flavia were dubbed by the same voice actor.
- A replica of Shao Jun's necklace is being sold in Ubiworkshop's store, for 24.99 US Dollars.
