For intentional glitches put in by Ubisoft, see Glitches.

The Assassin's Creed Series, like any game, has unintentional bugs.

Swimming under the streets with no way to get up.
Swimming under the streets with no way to get up.

Ragdoll physics

The physics engine in Assassin's Creed (Havok) experienced quite a few glitches, most notably those in the ragdoll physics. Ragdoll physics were the physics of a falling body, in which the body parts fell realistically and were affected by forces, as opposed to using a set animation. Occasionally, the physics system had some difficulty -- the glitch could have been as minor as a sword or other object strangely jutting out of the body or as major as a body flying through the air, each body part (head, feet, hands) many feet from each other.

"Assassin's Creed: Altaïr's Chronicles"

Platforms and Bugs Description

Altaïr's Chronicles was released for the Nintendo DS and the iPhone. It suffered from a number of glitches, most of them centered around the combat animations.

Bugs List

Assassin's Creed

Platforms and Bugs Description

Assassin's Creed was first released for XBox 350 and PS3 and later for PC's. The bugs it faced were mostly centered on the A.I. of the NPCs and interactions with the environment. A.I. would occasionally freeze, and the buildings occasionally had irregular interactions with Altaïr. Most could be solved with patches or exiting to the main menu and reloading the game.

Assassin's Creed: Project Legacy has a few glitches related to its money and skills acquisition system. Please see the bugs section for more deatails.

Bugs

Offset Strike

In Altaïr's Chronicles, if an enemy was on the ground, Altaïr could stab the enemy, killing him. However, if the Assassin was facing another direction or was offset from the fallen enemy, the animation still occurred away from the newly dead. This also occurred if Altaïr was in the middle of a crowd of guards and began making a series of combination strikes.

Bugs

False Scholars

Opening the map of Acre occasionally showed one or two unreachable Scholar icons.

Arsuf Ignorance

A rare glitch in the final assassination at Arsuf caused guards to ignore Altaïr or make him fall through the ground. Ubisoft has taken notice of this problem, as they have released patches.

Second Altaïr

A second Altaïr sometimes appeared while riding away from Masyaf on a horse, triggered by going between two pillars. On the right pillar was a surrounding glow usually associated with targetable objects or people. Investigating this yielded a second Altaïr. The second Altaïr, when targeted, mimicked the original exactly. If one Altaïr punched the other, the double punched back. One Altaïr assassinating the other caused desynchronization.

Mountain Trap

During the return to Masyaf in the final memory block, walking into the mountain near a market stall during the first combat sequence made Altaïr unable to escape the mountain, though it was still possible to attack guards who came close to the rock face.

Passable Wall

In Assassin's Creed I and II, climbing a wall or a box on the wall rarely allowed the Assassin to go through it and become stuck. The only exit was to drop, which made him fall for a few seconds before landing in invisible water. In Assassin's Creed desynchronization followed, but in Assassin's Creed II Ezio could swim around.

Stuck Guard

Sometimes, in the Kingdom, at least one of the more heavily guarded View Points had two climbable wooden structures that could break during battle. On occasion a guard was stuck inside one of the wooden structures. He couldn't move or attack, but the player could attack him from below while on foot.

Archer Replication

Sometimes if the player threw an Archer off a rooftop, he survived. If the player then hid, the archer went to the ground and became a normal guard. An identical archer then took the now normal guard's position.

Invincible Guard

Outside Damascus, two guards stood on a cliff. If the player pushed them off, one miraculously survived and began searching for Altaïr, as guards normally would. Any means of returning the social status to "Anonymous" would allow the player to avoid the indestructible guard.

Box Stunt

If the player ran or sprinted to a box and pressed the empty-hand button while on the box, Altaïr slid over the box.

-- Assassin's Creed: Bloodlines --

Bugs

No Boundaries

Memory walls in Bloodlines, meant to keep the player from accessing areas not part of the memory, could be bypassed by sprinting toward the wall and grabbing at a guard on the other side.[1]

Unseen Killer

On occasion, Altaïr spawned as an invisible man or a guard may. Reloading the game fixed the problem. [2]

Mountain Trap (Take II)

During the assault on Castle Buffavento, Altaïr was be able to fight his way through a mountain wall, very similar to the end of the first console game. Exiting and reloading the game fixed the problem. [3]

Bugs

Fire-breather

If a Carnevale performer was about to blow fire upwards near a merchant stand, the player could grab anyone nearby and throw them into it. Everyone near it died, including the performer, but fire continued to blow from his mouth.

Frozen Federico

During the mission Sibling Rivalry, Federico sometimes froze, thus giving the player all the needed time to complete the race. Doing a Leap of Faith at the tower, though, caused desynchronization mid-jump.

Double Weapons

It was possible to be stuck with a picked-up weapon. This occurred when the player attempted to counter a Brute but only managed to disarm the Brute, leaving the player holding both weapons. The Brute's weapon could be dropped, but the player's weapon became fixed to Ezio's hand, even when running or climbing. The player could not attack or switch weapons; he could only block or flee.

Climb Leap

When performing a climb leap jump on a sloped surface such as one of the church towers in Venice, Ezio sometimes fell instead of actually grabbing on to the the tiles or stones.

Venetian Tomb

In an Assassin Tomb in Venice, jumping at a certain point on rare occasions allowed Ezio to go out of the level with the only re-entry to the game being a restart.

Dante's Troubles

In the mission Cheaters Never Prosper, it was possible to kill Dante Moro and thereby to raise suspicion after stealing the mask.

In the mission Having a Blast, staying in the area for a long period of time allowed Ezio to fight Dante, but the Assassin was always unable to kill him. However, he could be lured to an area such as the docks where he could be pushed into the water, killing him instantly.

Fight in the Villa

In the Villa, entering the middle of the fight arena allowed Ezio to be attacked. If Ezio attacked the one of the two fighters, they stopped fighting and watched him.

Blade-stopper

If an archer shot Ezio during a cinematic assassination, the would-be target wouldn't die but rather simply stood there. Zooming in on the guard's face showed he was not dead, as he blinked and moved his head slightly. However, he could not be killed or unfrozen. It was as if he had become part of the landscape. Weapons also went through him and he would not participate in any fights.

Hyper-blending

When blending, travel onto a surface, water, climb a wall, etc. Ezio automatically blended as long as he remained on the respective surface.

Dangerous Bleeding

360: A rare, malicious glitch involving the bloodstains that appeared on Ezio's clothing during combat caused the stain textures to recursively load, eventually causing his armor and clothing to turn a flat semi-gloss red. The appearance of this glitch usually signaled some sort of hardware error, though specific action sequences caused it to occur as well. The only method to fix this glitch was resetting the game or exiting to the Dashboard, both of which had to be done as soon as possible, since the rapidly-recurring texture-loads would lag the system within ten seconds and caused it to crash within a minute. This glitch was 'officially' patched, according to some online forums, but still happened occasionally.

Duplicating Guard

File:Assassin's Creed II guard copying.jpg

Whilst playing through a mission, a very rare glitch occurred causing a guard to notice the player, and, as usual, to attack with a gray flash to the screen, indicating to the player that he'd been seen performing an illegal action. However, the guard would begin to duplicate himself, and, with each new copy, another gray flash appeared on the screen. This glitch was confirmed to occur on the PS3 and PC.

An Xbox 360 version of this glitch also occurred where an archer, if unaware to the player's presence, stopped moving, and duplicates of the archer would proceed to literally walk out of it and attack the player. This was confirmed to happen in Venice.

Too Agile

PC: In the first Assassin's Tomb (the one introduced by La Volpe), killing the Agile guard before he reached the next guard post caused a blank cut-scene with the entrance to the Assassin's Tomb, trapping the player. The only way to fix this was to restart the mission.

Cavalier Dual-Wielding

PC: If the player picked up a weapon (excluding heavy, long, short blade weapons) while he already had one and mounted a horse, Ezio wouldn't drop the picked up weapon. If the player made the horse walk, then Ezio tried to put the weapon in the sheath and immediately brought it back out.

Stolen Weapon

Sometimes when countering an attack with a medium weapon, it became part of the enemy's left hand with the hilt facing up. There was no way to get it back from him; Ezio would have to re-equip it in the Villa armory.

Ezio would also drop any hand-held weapon equipped when bribing a herald if, in the short gap between pressing "Bribe" and the small cut-scene of the transaction, the weapon was drawn out of its sheath. The slot would be empty, and the next weapon picked up will take its place with the message "Weapon Changed". The dropped weapon lay at the herald's feet and could be picked up.

Gondola Zombie

Dropping a dead body onto a gondola, if it stays in the boat and doesn't bounce out, caused amusing glitches if the gondola was then rowed away. The ragdoll seemed to crawl through the boat and eventually into the water.

Walking on Water

File:Jesusezio.jpg

In the mission Clothes Make the Man, when the player was asked to leave the gondola, one could simply jump on the gondola's bow instead. This caused the mission to end, but the gondola did not disappear. If the player used the gondola after the mission, it vanished after leaving a certain area but Ezio acted as if he was still using it and therefore seemed to be walking on water. Ezio eventually dropped into the water, though, if he travelled too far.

Garden Troubles

After killing any of Savonarola's 9 lieutenants, Ezio was supposed to become anonymous. If a Roof Garden was used to hide, the screen turned white occasionally, signalling that the mission was completed. When it restores to the normal state, Ezio was not be able to leave the rooftop he was on.

Headless Archer

During the memory Well Begun Is Half Done, when a player killed one of archers using Hidden Blade and threw him off the rooftop, the archer's head got stuck to the wall.

Doctor's Floating Orb

File:Monteriggioni Orb 1.png

A floating orb of light was noticed during night time on the doctor's roof in Monteriggioni. This was similar to the lighting found in a lamp.

Glitched Glyphs

After the player had resolved a glyph and the unlock code message appeared, if the player pressed A and B (for 360, X and O on PS3) repeatedly and quickly, the video appeared in full screen, and the player was stuck in "The Truth menu".

Floating Ezio

When the user was standing on a wooden candelabrum, moved towards the edge of it, hanged from the candelabrum, and then dropped onto a small ledge (like thin walls or wooden beams), the user "floated" along with the swinging candelabrum as if he was still standing on it.

Super Speed Glitch

Though the cause was unknown, the player sometimes entered a glitch that allowed them to climb and dive faster than normal. This happened in both Assassin's Creed II and Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood.

Airwalking

Ezio could walk through air by going on top of a large building and sprinting. Just before reaching the edge pushing the weapon hand button caused him to throw a knife like normal. However, he continued to run, even though there was no visible solid surface under his feet.

This also could occur for a short while when first entering [San Gimignano] and fighting towards Vieri de'Pazzi. It typically occurred when Ezio and the mercenaries met the first batch of soldiers at the steps near the blacksmith.

It also occurred for a short while if one jumped between the stern of the gondola and the man steering it.

Auditore Cape

When first equipping or re-equipping the Auditore cape, users in the Monteriggioni Villa became notorious even if the cape's description said otherwise.

Altaïr’s Armor

While wearing Altaïr's armor, the game crashed when performing multiple consecutive double assassinations.

Florence

Rarely when fighting guards the player fell through boxes and walked through hay carts.

Tuscany

The game occasionally crashed if the player died in Tuscany; the player became stuck in the Animus loading screen.

Venice

If Ezio grabbed onto boxes and white sheets beside a building and moved toward the wall, he went through the wall and won't be able to exit the building on occasion.

This glitch could be solved by ripping a poster off the wall if Ezio was not anonymous.

Water

Ezio and NPCs sometimes became stuck beneath the map if pushed into water.

Animus Loading Screen

There were reports of the game crashing while the player was in the Animus loading screen.

Sequence 06 Memory 02

An extremely rare issue would make the game freeze while Ezio was fighting the guards.

Sequence 07 Memory 02

Sometimes the civilians knocked down by Rosa would "float".

Sequence 07 Memory 07

When the user was in open conflict, under specific situations the game crashed.

Sequence 08 Memory 05

If a player desynchronized during the flying machine sequence, the player sometimes spawned near Leonardo's workshop and not on the tower.

Secret Location: Vizitazione

The user sometimes remained stuck after locking onto the agile guard with the gun.

Sequence 11 Memory 05

The user was not able to continue gameplay after quitting and loading the game. They would be stuck in the Hideout. Avoid quitting before the next sequence loads.

Sequence 14 Memory 02

The player fell through the texture if he was hit with rocks by the guards while climbing.

Invisible Giuliano

Sometimes, in the PS3 version of Assassin's Creed II, in the Pazzi conspiracy cutscene Giuliano de' Medici became invisible after being stabbed for the first time by Bernardo Baroncelli.

Glitched Ground

Sometimes, while walking normally (particularly in Florence), Ezio would suddenly stop and look down, similar to how he acts if he was looking over the edge of a building. A minor glitch, it would be solved simply by pulling back and walking away a few feet or simply jumping over the area in question.

Doctor Immortal

In the south of Florence, a doctor, when killed, would get back up. Repeatedly striking the doctor forced him so far away from his original spot (which should be out of sight) that he would get back up and not walk back. If Ezio walked back to the original spot, the doctor would be back in his original spot and the other doctor would be gone.

Glitched Antonio

In the memory If At First You Don't Succeed... sometimes Antonio teleported to random and even unreachable places.

-- Inject to Assassin's Creed: Discovery --

Ezio encountered many animation glitches in this game; a popular one was commonly seen during fights with guards and illustrated at right.

-- Inject to Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood --

Bugs

Floating Ezio

PS3 and 360: When tackling a pickpocket by leaping from a horse, or from on top, or off the side of a wall, Ezio rarely began to float upwards due to landing exactly on top of him. If the player tried to grab a wall, it would simply change Ezio's floating direction and speed as he bounced off it. This would also occur by calling in some of the Apprentices to assist Ezio. When one tried to kill a guard using their Hidden Blade at the same time as Ezio, the Apprentice would get the kill and Ezio would begin floating. A similar glitch to this occurred when climbing a building, where Ezio began to levitate, without flying away, though movement was still impossible; Eagle Vision wouldn't work properly. The best fix was to restart the console, as progress would be saved and Ezio would restart on the ground.

This glitch could similarly be triggered by a horse or air assassination.

Flee Training

360: In the Animus Virtual Training Program during a combat challenge, Ezio was able to move outside of the arena when moving on to the next wave of attackers. It was also possible to attack and be attacked through the walls.

Training Ad Infinitum

360: When doing a Virtual Training Mission, occasionally, the challenge would restart for no apparent reason, even when doing an action or taking a path that had been successful multiple times before.

Beyond Flawless

360: When doing the Flawless All Weapons challenge in Virtual Training, the maximum number of guards that spawn was set at 116. After killing the final guard, no more spawned and the player had to exit or restart the challenge to continue. The score was not saved.

Hidden Vaticano District

PS3 and 360: On a regular basis, the Vaticano district became hidden, as if no View Points had been synchronized there, even if all 24 View Points in the game had been. This happened even though there were no View Points in the Vaticano district. Exiting to the main menu and reloading the save game fixed the glitch.

Armor of Brutus

PS3, 360 and PC: When replaying a memory with a certain armor that had not been unlocked during that Sequence, Ezio was forced to wear the Armor of Brutus, even if it was impossible to obtain at the time of the original memory. Attempting to put on a different piece of armor after completing a memory while wearing the Armor of Brutus made the armor permanent. However, Ezio would change armors, but only the skin would change. Medicine could also be used, even if the synchronization bar was full.

Fast Poison

Normal poison originally appeared in the inventory; after upgrading to fast poison, the game showed normal poison as locked. It was still usable, however.

Game Ending Bug

360: During a new save file (after finishing the game once before), the player had to enter the Animus for Desmond's introduction to Rebecca's upgrades. The Virtual Training mission would not start, leaving the player unable to move. Starting a new game did not fix this.

Ghostly Populace

360 and PS3: Occasionally, for unknown reasons, civilians became invisible, though they were there and reacted as normal civilians do. This could also happen to the recruits when called for assistance, though the guards were aware of their presence, and both fought normally.

Apple and Armor

If Ezio attempted to retrieve the Armor and Dagger of Brutus, the player was automatically equipped with the dagger. This was problematic when holding the Apple, because Ezio isn't supposed to be equipped with anything except the Apple at this point. If the Apple was reselected as the primary weapon, Ezio froze, prompting a memory restart. This deleted both the Armor and Dagger of Brutus from that save file.

Under Rome

360: It was possible to fall through the map when falling into water -- this occurred after a guard falls into the same place beforehand. Ezio fell into invisible water and was unable to do anything other than swim. Only a game restart fixed this.

Invincible Guards

Very rarely, for unknown reasons, there were a few guards who could not be killed and would not respond to criminal activity. Ezio could attack or assassinate these guards just as he would to kill any other. In the glitch, however, once they fell to the ground, they got back up, just as if they had merely being thrown or knocked over. However, normal guards would respond to the attempts to kill the invincible guards. Leaving and returning later fixed this. The game occasionally would freeze if the player remained in the area too long.

Wrong Cinquedea

Once the Cinquedea short blade was unlocked at Blacksmith shops, it was pictured as the Channeled Cinquedea. It was labeled and in fact Ezio used the Notched version of the blade.

Play Dead, Cesare

In the final encounter against Cesare Borgia, if Ezio ran into Cesare he sometimes lay on the floor as if he had been killed and acted like a corpse. This prevented the player from interacting with him and the guards continued to attack Ezio infinitely. A mission restart fixed the problem.

Starting Screen

Sometimes, when at the starting screen, when the player pressed 'start', he or she was sent straight to Multiplayer without an option to go to Story mode. On an XBox 360, the problem was fixed by disconnecting from Xbox Live or deleting the most recent save game.

The Truth

When playing through the Animus "obstacle course" level after solving all the clusters, taking the wrong path too many times caused the game could glitch . The player was stuck in an area that he or she can't leave. Restarting the console began the fix. Once back in the game, Ezio would appear to be Desmond until the Truth was re-accessed and properly solved.

A freeze rarely occurred after emerging from the Animus and listening to Subject 16. Restarting the console returned Ezio to Italy as normal, though some items would have to be re-equipped. If the player ran too fast, he or she could get stuck in a section of stairs that hadn't loaded properly yet. The only exit was a restart of the Truth mission.

Herald Camera Reversal

360: Whenever notoriety had increased to a certain amount, heralds started to appear as normal and could be bribed. Occasionally, bumping into a herald and bribing him at the same time caused the camera to be reversed to always show Ezio's front and what was behind him. (This had also been reported on the PS3, though it was noticeably rarer.)

Recruits Cheat

When replaying a memory with the Ultimate Guild cheat activated, exiting replay mode left all recruits at the Assassino rank. If the Assassin's Guild challenge of training recruits was not complete, Altaïr's Sword became unobtainable until a new game was started.

Killing Bankers

Approaching a bank at a run and holding the Attack button with the hidden blade equipped allowed Ezio to assassinate a banker. However, he was trapped behind the bars of the bank until the game was reloaded from the main screen.

No Armor

After the War Machine missions were unlocked, if the player replayed Sequence 2 Memory 3, he or she could access the missions if they chose not to interact with Machiavelli. Patience was required, as desynchronization happened occasionally. By traveling to Tiber Island, the player then had to change outfits and the game caused the player to reappear at different areas of the map, such as the Colosseum. In order to reach the missions, the player was advised to travel via horse but to remain at slow speeds, in order to avoid desynchronization. By doing so the player could complete the missions without any armor added to their robes. This was a very rare, temperamental glitch.

Free Running Citizens

If Ezio grabbed a civilian and threw them over a wall next to water onto land, they got back up and started free running away until out of Ezio's sight. The best place for this was the wall directly opposite the Doctor shop on Tiber Island.

Parachutes

On occasion, players lost their parachutes when exiting a memory.

Synch Bug

If Ezio's synchronization became low, going through a tunnel to any destination restored it.

The Weapons' Disappearance

Sometimes, when on one of the War Machine missions, all the weapons Leonardo da Vinci gave Ezio (second Hidden Blade, poison darts) could be lost. This happened if the player failed a mission after burning the plans. However, all the weapons were be shown in Equipment menu.

Younger Ezio at Viana

A rare glitch occurred when the player changed the persona's outfit in Sequence 9. At the end of the mission when the Animus loading screen appeared, the user would be sent back to Viana as the younger Ezio wearing his robes from Assassin's Creed II without a hidden blade. He had the crossbow and 0 parachutes, there were no guards present, and basically the only action available was explore the map.

Neckless Recruit

Sometimes, after rescuing a civilian Ezio wished to recruit, the recruit's in-game model would leave him or her without a neck. It was particularly noticeable on the PS3 and more so for female recruits.

Shoulder Camera

Like in RE5 and Dead Space, the game camera could be made to appear behind Ezio's shoulder by entering the loading screen with the crossbow assigned to any quick select slot. If the player selected the crossbow, aimed and did not shoot, upon entering Rome, the game would show Ezio from behind his shoulder. It was possible to attempt this from the other side while aiming the hidden gun. Most actions, including haystacks, aiming either weapon, climbing ladders, etc. would disable the shoulder cam, though freerunning notably would not.

Ghost Blade

Rarely, Ezio's short blade, sword, mace, or heavy weapon became invisible or would remain sheathed. The player could still use it, and any means of sheathing the weapon disabled this.

Armless Minstrel

Occasionally a murdered minstrel would fall and lose one or both arms. This only appeared to happen with Minstrels.

Horse Spawn

Ezio occasionally spawned on a horse, though this did not impede his normal operation.

Transparent Villa

On very rare occasions, parts of the outer villa in Monteriggioni disappeared in the mission Emergency Exit and thus allowed the player to look inside.

Graphics Randomizer

Sometimes, when the game was left minimized for too long, the menu and game interface changed. For example, when entering a game after leaving it thus minimized, the slideshow of the textures in-game (leaves, pavements, walls) played across the screen, allowing the player to continue playing without seeing the results. The screen also became covered with character model textures, resembling The Truth screens slightly.

Reversed Hidden Blade

Occasionally, the hidden blade when selected and not in use would become reversed, often during cutscenes. This was fixed by selecting the Hidden Blade from the Weapons Wheel or the Quick Selection Menu.

Fast Money

Once a territory was purchased, the player could wait to collect funds, turn of his or her Internet connection, and repeatedly click "Collect". When the player has enough, he or she could return to the game by reconnecting themselves to the Internet.

Unlimited Skill Points

The player could gain unlimited skill points by having applied earned skill points without clicking the confirmation button. By selecting stats and returning to the skill points menu, more points could be applied.
