In Assassin's Creed, View Points are high structures that overlook the surrounding terrain, found in the Kingdom and all the cities, excluding Masyaf. They allow Altaïr to view the surrounding land and get his bearings. When climbed and activated with eagle vison, they uncover a portion of the map and show points of interest within the uncovered area, including Interrogation, Eavesdropping, Pickpocketing, and Assassin Informant Investigations, as well as Save Citizen optional missions. In addition, activating one View Point will reveal the locations of all the other view points in the city (or the Kingdom), placing an eagle icon representing each one on your map.

View points often take the form of watchtowers, turrets of castles and church/temple steeples. Some have archers patrolling them, which can be a problem if they detect Altaïr before he has reached the top, as they can knock him from the tower by throwing rocks at him. A pile of hay is always placed at the bottom of each view point, allowing Altaïr to perform a Leap of Faith to get down.

Altaïr viewing a city from a View Point.

View points are any structure high enough from where it's possible observe the surrounding terrain. They range from church towers and mansions' roof beams in the cities to watchtowers and guardposts on the roads.

Assassin's Creed

In the first game, view points were found in all the cities (Damascus, Jerusalem and Acre) and in the Kingdom, excluding Masyaf. Each map contained 10 to 12 view points located on the highest buildings; such as a cross on top of a Catholic Cathedral and the top of a lighthouse on the port-city of Acre, or a Mosque's roof and a palace guardtower on the city of Damascus.

Another easy way of identifying a possible View Point is the eagle that circles over the structure (as it always perches on the beam you can jump from).

Achievement

In the Xbox 360 version, Synchronizing with all View Points earns you an achievement:

Icon Name Description[note 1] Points Secret?
Fearless Complete all View Points. 25 No
 1. Descriptions may not match official descriptions.

Assassins Creed 2:

In Assassins Creed 2 there will still be view points but they will be much higher than most points in the first game. Not only will Ezio be landing in hay, he will also dive into carts of fish, wool and various other materials. He will also be able to dive into water. If there are guards on view points Ezio can grab them and throw them down before they notice him.
